Lexus set to rev up its image in 2007 by setting up a performance off-shoot division modeled on BMW’s revered M-division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG skunk works. To be made official at the Detroit motor show in January, it plans to turn out performance-orientated versions of each Lexus model, including its hybrid offerings.

The new performance department’s centerpiece will be a production version of the Japanese carmaker’s swoopy LS-F concept car due to be unveiled at next year’s Tokyo motor show. Lexus has already filed a trademarked for a stylized “F” logo to be used on its new models – the F apparently standing for Fast.

First cab off the rank for the new Lexus off-shoot will be a heavily-reworked version of the IS sedan aimed directly at the new BMW M3 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. To be badged IS-F, it is rumored to run a 425-hp version of the 5.0-liter V8 used in the LS600h hybrid developed in partnership with Yamaha, which supplies new cylinders and other lightweight internals.

Also in the pipeline, according to insiders from Lexus parent company Toyota, is a heavily tweaked GS with up to 500 horses from the same engine.

Fdivision Launches!

Hey all, it seems lexus finally decided to lay along with BMW, Audi, Benz in the high horsepower league with this new F division.  The first car slated to arrive is the IS-F at the Detroit autoshow.  I setup this blog and related forums to put up the latest news and information.  We have the forums linked in as well if you want to discuss further.  Let me know if you have any suggestions and enjoy!  I for one can’t wait to see what Lexus has up its sleeve.  I think this is going to be just like when Lexus first stepped on the scene and rattled Benz.  Now Lexus is going to rattle the M3 and R/S4 :)
